iPhone 6

The iPhone 5c and iPhone 5S may still be fresh in our minds, but Apple watchers are already looking ahead to the next iPhone, dubbed iPhone 6, new iPhone or iPhone 2014.

The most common questions in your mind may be Are these rumuors or true ?? When will the new iPhone 6 launch? How much will it cost in the UK? What additional features and specifications can we expect? Will the iPhone 6 have a bigger screen?

Here, we bring you the latest speculation to help answer those questions about the new iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 hasn't officially been announced yet and nothing if for certain as it's an Apple product. Of course, we're talking about Apple here. No one can say anything about Apple Inc. except for the Apple Inc.

This blog brings you all of the latest rumours about Apple's future iPhone 6, which we expect will arrive in 2014. Not everything here will be accurate, but we'll try to give you an idea of how plausible each rumour is.Or, at least, we'll tell you what we can glean from rumor and speculation - some reliable, some not so much.

One thing is for sure, with potential refreshes of such super handsets as the Samsung Note 2, Sony Xperia Z and HTC One, the next iPhone will have to seriously up its game.

iPhone 6 Release Date

The iPhone 6 release date will be in 2014.

As per rumours , there will be a June 2014 release for the iPhone 6. We reckon it will be later than that, around a year after the 5S, although that's no big leap.

iPhone 6 Casing

It's been suggested that there could even be three size variants of the new iPhone. Most porbably the handsets will be named as  iPhone 6 Mini, iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 XL (these look rather like the iPhone 5C variant though). However,it is to be pointed out that different size variants aren't exactly easy to just magic out of thin air.

Wiil iPhone 6 will run iOS 8 ??

With iOS 7 heading out of the traps now, who's betting against the next iPhone coming with iOS 8?

We'd expect a September or October release date for iOS 8 in line with previous releases.

iPhone 6 Screen

The Retina+ Sharp IGZO display, would have a 1080p Full HD resolution. It's also been widely reported that Apple could introduce two handset sizes as it seeks to compete with the plethora of Android devices now on the market.

The reports suggest that Apple will release multiple handsets throughout the year over and above the iPhone 5S and 6, which seems a bit far-fetched to us.

Patents show that Apple has been thinking about magical morphing technology that can hide sensors and even cameras. Will it make it into the iPhone 6? Probably not.

The new iPhone will have a bigger screen. Different sizes also seem rather likely to us - the word on the street says that there would be 4.7 and 5.7-inch versions.

iPhone 6 Eye Tracking

One thing seems certain - Apple can't ignore the massive movement towards eye-tracking tech from other vendors, especially Samsung. It seems a shoe-in that Apple will deliver some kind of motion tech within the next iPhone.

iPhone 6 Wireless Charging

Wireless charging still isn't mainstream. Could Apple help give it a push? CP Tech reports that Apple has filed a patent for efficient wireless charging, but then again Apple has filed patents for pretty much anything imaginable.

The tasty bit of this particular patent is that Apple's tech wouldn't just charge one device, but multiple ones. Here are more details on the iPhone 6 wireless charging patent.

Meanwhile, a further Apple patent seems to imply that future iPhones will be able to adjust volume as you move them away from your ear.

And could the iPhone 6 really have 3D? It's unlikely, but the rumours keep on coming...... And I'll keep you updating.. Keep coming back on my blogs  :) :)

Nokia Lumia 1520

Nokia had taken the wraps off a host of new devices at its event in Abu Dhabi, including a new phablet, the Lumia 1520. The phablet now makes its debut in India and is notable for the huge display, a clear signal that Nokia is bucking up to the competition, all of which have big-display bearing devices to their names.

The Lumia 1520 has been one of the most widely praised Nokia Lumias ever. The smartphone runs on the Windows 8 platform as all Nokia Lumia devices but also introduces a hoist of changes to the Lumia series. It is not just bigger but clearly better too !!

But that is just the tip of the iceberg for the Lumia 1520, which was earlier known as Bandit. So what has the Finnish smartphone manufacturer packing into the new handset? We took a closer look to find out:

For those unfamiliar with Lumia 1520's specs, here is a quick recap. The phablet's main selling point is the huge 6-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution and features Corning Gorilla Glass 2 coating.

Hardware-wise, the smartphone packs a powerful 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit and 2GB of RAM.

Another strong point of the Lumia 1520 is the impressive 20-megapixel PureView rear-facing camera, which features Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, dual-LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording.

The phone is definitely heavy on the pockets and comes with a price-tag of Rs 46,999. However, with many first-time features for Lumia and a great camera, we think the price might just be justified.

Reviews on NOKIA LUMIA 1020

Nothing else comes close

The Lumia 1020 is the spiritual successor to Nokia's first phone with a 41-megapixel camera sensor, the Nokia 808 PureView. While the 808 won rave reviews for its camera, the fact that it ran the dated Symbian operating system on underpowered hardware had many wondering - "What if this phone (rather, this camera) ran Windows Phone?" In that respect, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the realisation of a dream that many have harboured since using the 808.

Sadly, many dreams shatter on their first contact with reality. Is the Lumia 1020 one of those dreams or does this story have a happy ending, let's find out.

Build/ Design

Nokia Lumia 1020 inherits characteristics of other members of the Lumia family, with a polycarbonate body that looks and feels premium. The layout of buttons and other ports is pretty standard as well, with the volume controls, power and dedicated camera buttons on the right edge.

The back of the Lumia 1020 looks different from its Lumia cousins, thanks largely to the 41-megapixel camera module that sticks out of the back. The Lumia 1020, however, is just 10.40mm at its thickest and  weighs 158 grams, but doesn't feel too heavy.

The Lumia 1020 is available in Black and White colour options, in addition to the Yellow that we received as our review unit.

Display

The Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with a 4.5-inch (768x1280 pixel) ClearBlack AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a pixel density of 334 pixels per inch. While the resolution and pixel density might be dwarfed on paper when compared to the likes of HTC One, in real world usage, most are unlikely to notice a difference. The display on the 1020 is bright and the colour reproduction closer to the real world when compared with most other AMOLED displays, similar to what we noted in our Nokia Lumia 925 review.

Nokia claims that its ClearBlack technology ensures that users see truer blacks, which in turn enhances the contrast of the display, thanks mainly to reduced reflections on the screen. The result is a screen that is easy to use, even in bright sunlight.

The screen comes with Nokia's super sensitive touch technology which means that the touchscreen can be operated even while wearing gloves or by using a pen as a stylus.

Camera

Needless to say, the highlight of the Nokia Lumia 1020 is its 41-megapixel camera, so we'll be focusing most of our energy on this section. While the sensor inside the Lumia 1020 is 41-megapixel, the pictures it clicks are either 38-megapixel or 34-megapixel, depending upon if you are clicking pictures in 4:3 mode or 16:9, similar to what we saw in the Nokia 808 PureView.

Another significant improvement in the 1020 is the addition of Optical Image Stabilisation that has been found to be working really well on the likes of Nokia Lumia 925.

Further, you get to see only the 5-megapixel version of your images while browsing the gallery, and the photos that get automatically uploaded to SkyDrive (should you chose to do so) are 5-megapixel. While it's understandable that Nokia doesn't offer the option of uploading full-resolution images over cellular data, an option to have these photos saved to SkyDrive over Wi-Fi could've been provided as a workaround.

Coming back to the in-app editor that we touched upon briefly, it lets you open full-resolution images and zoom in and out to get exactly what you were looking for. This works pretty well and is a good way of discovering details that perhaps weren't even visible to the naked eye while clicking the photograph. As While cropping the image, called reframing, you even have the option to change its aspect ration to one of 3:2, 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9. This is 'lossless zoom' as Nokia intended.

Perhaps the biggest downside of the Nokia Pro Camera app is the 3-4 seconds time that it takes to save a photo.

Nokia Pro Cam is one of the many camera apps (or lenses as they are called in Windows Phone) installed on the Lumia 1020 and that can be a little confusing for users. You can switch to any of these apps by clicking the switch lens button on the bottom right of the screen, but remember that only the Nokia Pro Cam can take 34-/38-megapixel pictures. The other lenses (apps) that the Lumia 1020 ships with are Bing Vision, Camera360, the default Windows Phone Camera, Nokia Cinemagraph, Nokia Smart Cam, Panorama and Vyclone.

Nokia Smart Cam clicks a series of photos in burst mode and then recommends the best photo(s). It even lets you mix and match elements from different shots to come up with the perfect shot. Vyclone is a video editing tool, Cinemagraph lets you create small animations from your images, while Camera360 lets you apply various effects to your photos and share them on various social networks. As we noted in our Lumia 720 review, Panorama lens is perhaps the worst way to create panoramic pictures we've come across in recent times and, sadly, nothing's changed on that front.

However, on several occasions we found the images clicked by the phone to lack detail, when compared to ones clicked by the iPhone 5s and even the year-old iPhone 5.

Having said that, if you feel right at home adjusting the likes of exposure settings and white balance before hitting that camera button, you'll find the Lumia 1020 to be a delight. Images clicked in manual mode turn out as good, if not better than any other smartphone out there.

Low-light photography is pretty good as well, and we dare say more to our taste than the likes of Lumia 925 that have a way of capturing stuff that even human eye can't see. Call us crazy, but we find that a little unnerving. While we are on the subject, though we have a strict no-flash policy while capturing photos, we realise that most people never change away from the Auto mode, and thus put the flash to good use. There's good news on that front as the Xenon flash on the Lumia 1020 is perhaps the best we've come across date. The flash lights up the subjects in an even and powerful fashion, minus the glare that is associated with a typical flash.

Another thing that the Lumia 1020 has going in its favour is the large field of view compared to most other phones. This means that the phone is able to capture an image that is wider as well as taller than most smartphones.

The Lumia 1020 is capable of recording full-HD (1920 x 1080) videos at 30 frames per second. The quality of videos is excellent, with Nokia's Rich Recording technology earning its money with an ability to capture crisp audio even in noisy outdoor conditions.

The front camera can capture 720p video and is as capable front shooter as we've come across in a smartphone.

Software

Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with the Windows Phone 8 Amber update and the overall software experience is no different from its siblings. Nokia bundles many of its own apps to enhance the core Windows Phone functionality, and we've documented our fondness for the Drive app before, which we believe is a worthy competitor to Google Maps. For a detailed look at the Amber update and the new features/ apps that it brings, please refer to our Lumia 625 review.

The most notable additions in the 1020 to the apps that are available in other Lumia smartphone apps are the imaging-related apps that we've covered in the Camera section above.

Overall, the Amber update doesn't do anything to address many of our complaints related to Windows Phone like the lack of a notification centre or the fact that platform is still not a priority for developers, as shown by the absence of apps like Instagram. Even popular apps like Facebook that have a presence on Windows Phone lack features compared to their iOS or Android counterparts.

Performance/ Battery Life

Windows Phone 8-based smartphone rarely have performance issues, and the Lumia 1020 is no exception. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor alongside 2GB RAM that handles everything you throw at it pretty smoothly, other than the lags in the Nokia Pro Cam we talked about earlier - whether beefed up hardware would've minimised the delay or if that's entirely a software issue, is something Nokia would know best.

Browsing is good, and the web pages render quickly, but yet again we run into Windows Phone 8 limitations like the fact we can't have more than 6 tabs open at the same time. On a machine with plenty of RAM, that seems artificially crippling. All games and apps we tried run smoothly, but then there are no Infinity Blade-equivalents on Windows Phone to push the hardware to its limit, so other than a few games that require a certain amount of RAM to run, the experience on a phone like the 1020 is not very much different from its entry-level Windows Phone siblings.

The Lumia 1020 comes with 32GB of non-expandable storage, with 29.12GB available for the end user. While that seems like plenty of storage, on a phone that captures large-sized images, an option to have expandable storage would've been nice. In case you are wondering, the 1020 comes with FM radio support, which can be utilised thanks to the pre-installed Amber Update.

For most users, the Nokia Lumia 1020 would easily last a day on a single charge, even if connected to a 3G network throughout. However, if you go on a clicking spree during the day, you will find yourself reaching for the charger quicker than you may think.

Verdict

Nokia Lumia 1020 is priced at Rs. 49,999 which makes it slightly more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and considerably pricier than other flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z1 and Sony Xperia Z Ultra. Nokia can thank Apple for small mercies, which announced a Rs. 53,500 price tag for the iPhone 5s earlier this week, making the Lumia 1020 the second-most expensive smartphone available right now.

It is fair to say, that as far as the overall experience is concerned, the Lumia 1020 is inferior to all other smartphones mentioned above. If you are willing to spend Rs. 50,000 on a smartphone, you don't need to look beyond the iPhone 5s, which is superior to the Lumia 1020 in all respects, and as we noted in our Camera section, perhaps a better everyday camera for most users, despite 1020's obviously superior imagining capabilities that need an experienced hand to make the best use.

We've documented shortcomings of Windows Phone earlier, and the Lumia 1020 inherits all of them, with the OS only now getting ready to support full-HD screens and other top of the line specs that have been found in Android phones for a while. You can argue that the iPhone 5s doesn't compete on specs either, but the app ecosystem and overall experience on iOS is unrivalled. So if Windows Phone doesn't compete on hardware, the ecosystem, and, with the 1020, not even the price, it's hard to make a strong case for it.

Yes, shutterbugs will love the Lumia 1020 camera, but at the price tag one has to wonder if they are perhaps better off buying a point-and-shoot camera, which are getting smaller, easier to carry bodies and bigger sensors, and a mid-level smartphone. If you want one that runs Windows Phone, pick the Nokia Lumia 720, which is still our favourite Windows Phone running device, or the Nokia Lumia 920 which is now reportedly available at heavy discounts compared to its launch price.

Price: Rs. 49,999

Pros

-Great camera
-Good performance, display

Cons

-Expensive
-Nokia Pro Cam app lags

Apple iPhone 5S vs Samsung Galaxy Note3

Introduction

Timing is everything in the industry! One moment, one smartphone is being praised with acclaim, and the next, another newer smartphone is taking the spotlight – seemingly taking away the fanfare surrounding the previous one. Well folks, that’s exactly what’s going on in the space right now, as the iPhone 5s arrived on the scene a week ago, only to be challenged by the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 this week. Heading into that crucial holiday time frame, there’s no arguing that these two are vying for business from consumers, so let’s dissect them both to find out how they perform against one another.

Design

Honestly, there’s nothing really new with the designs of both, as the iPhone 5s recycles the design of its predecessor – while the Note 3 receives a subtle redesign with its faux-leather rear casing. Regardless of that, it’s the iPhone 5s that continues to have the premium attachment with its design, which is mainly attributed to its sturdier brushed aluminum casing. Although Samsung mixes it up with a new textured rear casing, accented by the stitched pattern around the sides, the Note 3 is still a plastic device at heart, which doesn’t have the same luxury feel as the iPhone 5s. And when it comes to size, there’s no arguing that the iPhone 5s is considerably more form fitting in the hand and less taxing in the pockets than the ginormous Note 3.

Diving deeper into their arsenal, we really need to point out the Note 3’s extensive offerings – it’s just packed to the roof with so many goodies. Specifically, it features an IR blaster that turns it into a universal remote, the S Pen stylus for precise interaction with the Note 3, and a removable rear cover that grants us access to its battery and microSD card slot. There are still many other small details too, like its microUSB 3.0 port that exemplifies its features set. In contrast, the most noteworthy thing coming along with the iPhone 5s is its new biometric Touch ID finger print sensor, which is accurate and provides us with yet another security option.

Display

Going off their size, it’s a battle between big and small in the comparison again, as the Note 3’s 5.7” display easily dwarfs the iPhone 5s’ 4” display. Heck, the entire body of the iPhone 5s can fit within the Note 3’s display by itself! To be exact, it’s a 4-inch 640 x 1136 Retina Display on the iPhone 5s, and a significantly larger 5.7-inch 1080 x 1920 (1080p) Super AMOLED screen in the Note 3. Naturally, the detail superiority goes to the Note 3, but it’s only evident when we look at the two very closely – just because our eyes can’t tell the difference from a normal distance.

Each has their strengths and weakness, naturally, but when it comes to outdoor visibility, it’s the iPhone 5s that continues to be the winner. And when it comes to colors, the iPhone 5s’ display produces the more realistic colors – whereas it’s over saturated on the Note 3 in the default mode. Putting these two side-by-side in a store, though, we certainly feel that the Note 3 would get more looks due to its iridescent glow and sharp looks.

Furthermore, it’s worth mentioning that there’s more tech involved with the Note 3’s display. In fact, it’s able to track our finger, or the S Pen, while we’re hovering it over the display. It definitely has some benefits, like in the web browser, where the S Pen is able to mimic the function of a mouse cursor.

Display Measurements and Quality

Quality Comparison

Camera

We’ll break their respective camera interfaces really quick here. The Note 3 offers many manual controls and an eclectic mix of camera modes. Oppositely, the iPhone 5s has very simplified experience.

Oh boy! It’s a close one with these two beauties when it comes to picture quality from their respective cameras – an 8-megapixel iSight camera on the iPhone 5s and a 13-megapixel snapper on the Note 3. Rather than talking about the tech behind their camera gear, we’ll go straight to the results and how they compare. Honestly, they snap some stunning looking outdoor shots where lighting is plentiful. Details are sharp, colors are natural, and exposure seems to be balanced enough between light and dark areas. However, it seems as though there’s just a smidgen more detail with the Note 3’s shots – albeit, it’s only noticeable looking deep into the shots.

Under low light, though, the iPhone 5s pushes slightly ahead of its rival, as it’s less prone to blurring and noise. It’s still pretty damn good with the Note 3, but its details appear softer in tone. In fact, it seems as though that the iPhone 5s has a faster shutter speed, enabling it to capture individual drops of water coming out from a fountain – whereas it’s more of a continuous stream with the Note 3. Using their respective flashes, we’ll mention that they cast a potent enough tone to give flesh tones a more natural color.

Video Quality Comparison

When it comes to video recording quality, the same elements from their still picture quality persists here – so they excel when lighting is plentiful, while details take a dip under low lighting. However, there’s just more noise evident with the Note 3 under low light, which naturally softens the overall tone of the video. The two also feature slow motion video recording too, but we actually prefer the iPhone 5s’ implementation more, as we’re able to apply the effect post recording. On the flip side, the Note 3 has the unique ability of shoot video in 4k resolution (3840 x 2160) – something that’s not offered by its rival.

Camera Speed

Multimedia

Even with the new redesign of iOS, we don’t find its music player any better in the visuals and functionality department over the Note 3. At the end of the day, the music look players are rather conventional looking. Strangely, it’s the iPhone 5s that catches the attention of our ears, seeing that its output volume is noticeably more potent than the Note 3.

Call Quality

Their earpieces have enough of a potent punch to allow us to discern voices even in noisy environments, however, there’s a hint of crackling heard with the Note 3. On the other end of the line, our callers tell us that they’re presented with natural toned voices with the iPhone 5s – whereas it’s more robotic on the Note 3. And finally, their speakerphone qualities pretty much rival one another, seeing that we’re able to carry on conversations will relative ease.

Battery

Impressively, the Note 3 provides us with more battery life than the iPhone 5s. To be exact, normal usage between the two permits us close to 2 whole days with the Note 3, and an average 1 day with the iPhone 5s. For power users, the Note 3 continues to show its longevity by providing us with a full 24 hours before charging becomes necessary – while the iPhone 5s taps out around the 10 hour mark.

BATTERY LIFE
We measure battery life by running a custom script, replicating the power consumption of typical real-life usage.

Conclusion

The Note 3 is targeting to a specific demographic – those who heavily prize organization and hardcore productivity above everything else. Knowing that, the amount of features attached to it can make some people feel overwhelmed. Well, either that or they simply would never use any of those features to begin with.

In contrast, the iPhone 5s is the smartphone that’s going to be able to catch a wider audience, mainly because it’s simple and just works in the things we need it to do. Throw in the updated iOS 7 experience, it’s something that we certainly haven’t encountered before. Looking at the TouchWiz experience on the Note 3, it packs some new and updated features, but as a whole, it borrows from its siblings and very much acts like other Galaxy smartphones – save for its S Pen functionality of course.

Beyond the software experience, we’ll vouch that the iPhone 5s’ design continues to be the more favorable one – and that’s despite the obvious fact that it’s a recycled one too. We still appreciate the subtle level of sophistication attached to the Note 3’s updated design, but it lacks the premium construction of its rival to make it an equally compelling offering. At the end of the day, we can talk how one is better than the other in this or that category, but it’s all about what you need and want as an individual. If features and productivity are your thing, choose the Note 3. However, if you favor simplicity and ease, choose the iPhone 5s. That’s all folks!

Google Nexus 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

The Google Nexus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4, along with being two of the most popular phones on the market, are also two of the most important mobile phones of the year 2013 – by virtue of being manufactured by the creators of the Android OS and arguably the most successful mobile manufacturer in recent times respectively. While both of these are top of the line phones, there are certain subtle differences that could make you want to pick one over the other. Here’s a closer look at both these phones to help make it easier for you to choose between the two.

Build

While both the Galaxy S4 and the Nexus 5 weigh exactly the same – 130g, the Nexus 5 is 1.2 mm taller and 0.6 mm narrower than the S4. However, the S4 remains slimmer at 7.9 mm compared to the 8.6 mm thick Nexus 5. The differences are miniscule. However, the Nexus 5 has done away with the plastic finish of its predecessor, the Nexus 4, and adopted a rubberized finish; while the S4 still continues to use the plastic finish of Samsung’s Galaxy series. This adds a subtly premium look and feel to the Nexus 5. This, combined with the sleeker dimensions of the Nexus 5, make it more comfortable to grip than the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Display

The Nexus 5’s display at 4.95 inches is a tiny bit smaller than the S4’s 5 inch display, but that’s a difference you won’t notice. Both phones have full 1080p displays protected by a sheath of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The Nexus 5 uses the same IPS panel as the LG G2, which received plenty of positive feedback, and has been touted to be one of the best displays around. The images on the Nexus 5 are slightly sharper than on the S4, but it’s not a difference that you’re likely to notice.

Power

Simply owing to being a newer phone, the Nexus 5 has a more advanced processor and thereby more processing clout. The Nexus 5 is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 vs. the S4’s 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 chip (although there is a newer version with the more advanced chip). The Snapdragon 800 also has a faster GPU, giving the phone more graphical clout, and making it a slightly better phone for gaming. Both devices have a 2 GB RAM.

Storage

The Nexus 5 comes in 16 GB and 32 GB internal storage variants, whereas the S4 allows you to choose from 16, 32, and 64 GB variants (However, the higher internal memory variants are harder to come by in case of the S4). For those of you who plan to use your phone as a portable video camera, the microSD slot on the S4, that allows you to extend the phone’s memory up to an additional 64GB, might come in handy. The Nexus 5 does not have a microSD slot.

Camera

In terms of sensor resolution, the S4 at 13-megapixel has the superior camera of the two; the Nexus 5 has an 8-megapixel primary shooter. However, the latter comes with optical image stabilization, which helps reduce blur in your pictures. However, the S4 does a better job of maintaining colour integrity and takes slightly better pictures in bright light. Having said that, for casual use, you’ll find that the Nexus 5’s camera should suffice.

Software

This one definitely swings in favour of the Nexus 5 – you get the unmodified version of the latest Android OS, and not the S4’s TouchWiz interface. This tends to be cleaner and faster than skinned versions of the OS. You’ll also be first in line for OS updates. However, you miss out on some of the additional features Samsung has built into the TouchWiz interface.

In a Nutshell

The Nexus 5 is a more powerful phone with similar features as the S4. Both phones are at par on most fronts, save minor nuanced differences, that will tilt the balance in favour of one phone or the other depending on each user’s specific needs. What works most in the Nexus 5’s favour is that it is a lower priced phone with quality that is similar to the S4’s.
